Why choose this course?

The A Level Physical Education qualifications allows students to play to their physical strengths and gain dynamic theoretical knowledge for further education or a career in the sporting
industry.The course has been designed to challenge and support students as well as giving them an insight into different areas of physical education such as applied anatomy and physiology, skill acquisition and sport in society.

Course Content/Main Topics

The course is split into a practical element that is 30% of your overall marks and the theory that makes up 70%. Practically you need to demonstrate skill and competitive involvement in a sporting activity. For the theory you will sit 2 x 2 hour exam papers covering a range of different topics which include: Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Skill Acquisition, Sports Psychology, Biomechanics, Sport and Society and Technology in Sport.

Careers and Higher Education

A Level PE is not an easy subject as it involves studying 4 different aspects including physical performance. It is highly recognised by Universities as a good A Level due to the diversity of its content. Studying PE at A Level can be a useful ‘stepping stone’ towards a variety of career options in the sporting sector.
This could be in the leisure industry, teaching, physiotherapy, coaching, sports psychology, sports journalism and sports medicine, to name but a few.

However, due to its diversity and well respected theoretical foundations, there are many different career paths that the course can lead on to - not just sport related!

A Level

Assessment

70% of A Level = 2 written exams: 2 hours each - 105 marks
30% of A Level = 45 marks available for performance in one sport; 45 marks for the completion of written 'performance analysis' coursework.

Entry Requirements

Grade 5 or above in English and Science.
Grade 5 or above in GCSE PE.

Strong performance level in a sporting activity is highly advised.
